KU Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director

The University of Kansas School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Residency Program Director to be an integral member of a growing emergency medicine program.  The Emergency Department is currently 57 beds with 33 faculty, 30 residents, & 10 APP’s serving greater than 64,000 annual visits at a 1,045-bed Level 1 trauma center.  The medical center is also a comprehensive stroke center, STEMI & advanced cardiac care center, NCI-designated cancer center, and an active transplant center.

The ED patient population is diverse and reflects the high acuity & complexity of the hospital’s advanced specialties.  An ED expansion is currently in progress, with completion in the fall of 2023.  It will result in greater than 75 all-private & monitored beds, a 2nd CT scan, multiple new resuscitation bays, and ample provider and nursing workstations.  The department has active fellowships in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Ultrasound, Administration, and Education.

 

General Description:

This person will serve as the Program Director of the University of Kansas Emergency Medicine Residency Program.  We are a 3-year, ACGME Accredited Residency Program that began in 2009 and currently accepts 10 residents per year.  The Program Director is responsible for meeting the highest standards of excellence in graduate medical education.  This position reports to the Department Chair and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/DIO and provides oversight and leadership to the APDs and Program Coordinator.

 

Program Director Responsibilities:

  • Meet or exceed the ACGME program requirements for Emergency Medicine residency programs
  • Lead continuous program improvement and innovation
  • Be a role model for professionalism
  • Demonstrate a collaborative management style
  • Foster a supportive learning environment
  • Timely completion of ACGME WebADS and KUMC annual program evaluation
  • Lead the Program Evaluation Committee (PEC)
  • Participate in the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) meetings
  • Oversee the resident evaluation process and semi-annual reviews
  • Work with program coordinator and department liaisons to gather resident practice data
  • Monitor the resident experience on clinical rotations
  • Work with APDs on curriculum development and optimizing the educational sessions
  • Monitor learner performance/progress/professionalism.  Develop necessary action plans/remediation plans, etc.
  • Work with residents and faculty to develop a residency recruitment plan: residency fairs, social media presence, application screening, interview experience, and rank list committee
  • Oversee the residency program budget and work with department chair to fund strategic initiatives
  •  Address the following issues in a timely manner: resident and faculty concerns, SI reports, department changes that affect graduate medical education.
  • Oversee resident career development
  • Participate as a core faculty member in the EM residency program including giving lectures, participating in scholarly work, attending faculty meetings, attending residency related meetings, and residency events

 

Career Development:

  • Attend the KU quarterly program director meetings
  • Join one KU GME committee/subcommittee
  • Attend the national residency director (CORD) meeting at least every other year
  • Demonstrate active involvement in state, regional, or national scientific societies
  • Seek a national committee position with CORD, ACEP, or SAEM

 

Clinical:

  • Work clinical duties as directed by the chairperson of Emergency Medicine
  •  Supervise residents, medical students, and others as required of attending physicians

Qualifications:

  • MD, DO, or MD/PhD
  • Completion of accredited Emergency Medicine residency program and current ABEM or ABOEM certification
  • Must have at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience.
  • Must have a minimum of three years’ experience as core faculty.
  • Preferred completion of Medical Education Fellowship.
  • Must demonstrate active involvement in scholarly activity.
  • Will need to maintain appointment with the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
  • Will need to maintain Hospital privileges at the University of Kansas Hospital/Health System.
